Alcoholism Does Not Discriminate - Do You Know This Person?

Alcoholism is a disease that does not discriminate, attacking both young and old and people of all races and professions. When most people picture an alcoholic they think of the “town drunk” in an old west movie or perhaps the guy down on his luck on skid row, but the fact is that alcoholics are doctors, lawyers, public officials, friends and family members. You may have an alcoholic friend or family member and not even be aware of it. Your doctor may go straight from his office to the country club each day.
The cause of alcoholism is still not 100% solved, although most researchers believe that it lies in family genetics. People with alcoholism are not necessarily bad individuals. They’re sick, hopeless and desperate. Alcoholism is a very serious disease that will eventually lead to death for the drinker, unless they somehow manage to get into and stay in a recovery program.
Many non-alcoholic people tend to pass judgement on these poor souls by just assuming that they’re worthless and that they don’t want to quit. They believe that these individuals can just put the bottle down and end the problem, but it’s not that simple. Alcoholics suffer from a physical need for the alcohol. They can smell it, taste it and it consumes their thoughts to the point of practically driving them crazy until they either consume more or finally pass through the “dt’s”. Even then the cravings are intense. Also, they have to learn how to live all over again after getting clean.
People can actually die from alcohol withdrawals, unlike other drugs, such as heroin, which will make the addict violently ill, but under proper supervision those withdrawals are not potentially lethal.
Approximately one in ten people suffer from alcoholism, so the next time you see someone that has a visible drinking problem, why not try to lend them a helping hand rather than a large dose of criticism?
