The Simplest Stress Free Strategy For Getting Things Done

Posted on March 30, 2008 - Filed Under Self Improvement

You have probably heard of the idea where you get a diary and write down every thing in order of urgency or priority.
This is not something I have ever tried. But then I have always been a person who just writes down things and ticks them off as I go.

Probably, one of the key reasons why I do not sit down and write everything down is because I cannot be bothered about working out what is urgent or what is not urgent. But then I am not one of those people who get caught up in attending to too many things that distract me if I know what I am going to do that day.

Yes, I’ve had those days where I just didn’t feel like doing anything other than taking it easy, so I did. Fortunately, for me, I have been in the position where I could do that most of my life. Not because I didn’t work, but because I have always been my own boss, with a couple of exceptions, many years ago.

My method of getting things done has been to attend to whatever comes up and deal with it there and then. Depending on circumstances, the amount of time I will devote to a given thing will depend on how free my day is, what I have on my mind to do that day, and how engaging I find the person, or people, I may be talking with at the time.

Of course, if you have to see a number of clients in a day, which is what I have had to do in the past, then I would simply organize the day to fit. Seeing clients is not just a matter of me writing down which ones are the most urgent. Rather it would be which one’s had time to see me. So, once more, we are back to the writing down the clients I have to see and ticking off the ones I actually did see. If I did not get to see them, then I would simply put them onto the next day’s page.

It also helps if you write down how much you want to earn each day, and then make that your task for the day. You have a goal for the day and then you write down what you need to do to achieve your goal.

Many people are in sales and they use a formula for doing telephone calls and arranging appointments and averaging out what these are potentially worth based on their sales record or on what sales they hope to achieve. If you are in sales simply write down your potential financial goal for the day.

There is something about writing down what you are going to do in the day and ticking it off that gets you motivated. Order of urgency doesn’t really matter. What you did not manage to get done, you just put it down for the next day. Urgency has a habit of presenting itself. What really matters is knowing your objectives for the day and writing them down. Ticking them off gives you a sense of achievement and this provides motivation.

You will find that you will definitely get more done when you make a point of writing down what you hope to get done each day and ticking each item off as you go. You can even give yourself a challenge, to see how many days you actually get a 100% record. But don’t set your goals too low. It is more fun being a high achiever and raising the bar.
