Dog House Training Basics
Posted on July 1, 2008 - Filed Under Pets
It goes without saying that the first thing you should do with a new dog is house training. Ideally, you want a dog to be house trained as quickly as possible so that you can trust it to be in the house with you and the family. If your dog is kept outside or in a certain area, then bonding is going to be a much slower process.
First of all, there are likely to be accidents when house training a dog which often cannot be avoided. Never punish your dog for these accidents, as that will only make your dog wary of your and going to the toilet around you rather than teaching it not to go inside.
A powerful tool when training a new dog is routine. Work out when your dog is most likely to go to the toilet, such as after meals or after sleeping, and then always take him outside at these times. This becomes even more reliable if you feed your dog at a certain time each day, so that it begins to learn it should go to the toilet outside. It may even be helpful to keep a record of when your dog goes to the toilet so you can see when it is most likely to happen.
Not only should your dog be taught not to go to the toilet inside, but it will also make cleaning up easier if it is taught to only go in one place in the garden. You can enforce this idea by always taking the dog to the same place when it needs the toilet.
