Email Autoresponders - What The Heck Are Those?
Posted on December 16, 2007 - Filed Under Internet
Autoresponders are computer programs that automatically answer emails sent to it. Another way to define an autoresponder is that it is a computer program that automatically returns a pre-written message to anyone who submits email to a particular Internet email address, whether for an individual or a website. Autoresponders are widely used by websites to respond to visitor questions, suggestions or comments in a predefined way.
If you’ve ever inquired about specific information online about a product or service, or signed up for an email list or joined a membership site on the Internet, and received a nearly immediate reply in your e-mail inbox, an autoresponder program was responsible for delivering the response.
To summarize, autoresponders are email programs that send out a preset or prewritten message in response to every incoming e-mail messages it receives to it’s email address. Some autoresponders, like opt-in sign-up forms for e-groups and forums, are once only in nature: an individual single preset response for every message received. It is rare that you find an Internet based company that does not use autoresponders for a multitude of tasks. The tasks vary from automating tasks that would otherwise take up hundreds of man-hours to responding to customer inquires and pricing information to building lists and tracking prospective leads.
Multiple autoresponders or sequential autoresponders as they are often referred to are designed to collect different email addresses and then send out a series of pre written messages to subscribers that have joined your email list. For instance, a sequential autoresponder can be used to send a once only reply just like the basic autoresponder described above. The big difference is that you can send multiple messages on a timed basis: day one, you send out a welcome reply to a new subscribers, then a follow-up message three days later, then another five days after that, and so on. It can be programmed to send a message a day, one per week, twice monthly, or any interval that satisfies the purpose of the message series. It can be a very handy tool to have around, especially if you work with a lot of clients/subscribers. A good autoresponder program can help you maintain your email list, keep track of your subscribers and keep your subscribers informed about what is going on in your business.
There are many types of autoresponders to choose from. The best way for you to determine which is best for you is to do a keyword search for Autoresponders or something similar and then visit each website and review each product features page until you find one that will fulfill your business needs. Prices will vary from the free version to full services responders that run up to $19.95 monthly.
The programs you will find out there will range from web based programs to scripts or programs that run through your computer or personal server. An autoresponder should be a major component of you Internet marketing arsenal and if you are not using one yet, please go now and investigate them further. If you put the proper research and time into finding your ideal autoresponder, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and headache in the long run.
Basically, there are three main types of autoresponders that you can choose from:
1. Remote hosted are hosted on someone else’s server or website
2. Locally hosted will allow you to work programs for your own web server.
3. Desktop programs on the other hand, will allow you to work from your own computer.
The two types I am most familiar with are the remote hosted, which is what I choose to use and the local hosted which I will probably switch to once my email list justifies purchasing a good autoresponder software program.
Suffice to say that autoresponders are one of the most powerful Internet marketing tools available. They are easy to use, and once they’re set up the entire marketing process is automated and instant. When you use autoresponders, your Internet business runs itself 24 hours a day. Launching an effective autoresponder campaign can mean the difference between a struggling business and a wildly successful one.
