For those of us who deposit lots of fat in our midsection, we are at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke than those who store fat evenly around the body. For us, we must attack this problem because our very survival is dependent on it. Here are some mistakes to avoid.

First of all, spot exercising to rid a region of our body of fat does not work. Pretty much the first thing we think of when trying to get rid of belly fat is doing situps or crunches. It sounds like a good idea. We are targeting the area that needs exercise to burn fat. Since we believe this myth, we do situps and crunches until we are about to throw up. What really happens? Well, we exercise the abdominal muscles. These muscles are responsible for holding our guts in basically. Exercising this region will strengthen our bodies and also relieve lower back pain because strong abdominals help our back muscles out. The problem is that we aren’t burning a lot of calories so that fat is still going to be there.

Another big mistake weight loss seekers make is buying the ab squisher or ab crunching device or ab flipper, (names changed for comic effect) or whatever is sitting on the store shelf. Again, these devices target small groups of muscle and will not burn the fat off fast.

Real results are gained when you exercise aerobically for at least 30 minutes a day. Walking is the best exercise, especially if you are overweight. Walking is low stress and almost everyone can do it quite easily. Taking a walk for 30 minutes a day along with eliminating excess sugar from our diets will go a long way to losing that belly fat.
