Dog Allergies And Grooming
Posted on May 3, 2008 - Filed Under Health and Fitness
Dog allergies are a result of exposure to dog dander which is really just dead skin. Unfortunately dander when inhaled causes problems for many people. There are ways to reduce dander and other related allergy problems that your dog may be causing. Dogs which are not well taken care of will cause more allergy problems.
In addition to dog allergies, dogs can carry pollen in from the outside and cause pollen allergy symptoms.
Proper and daily grooming of your dog will get rid of some of the excess dander. Of course all grooming should take place outdoors. Commercial pet wipes are available at most pet stores and can also be used to clean your dog of some of the allergens. Regular bathing will also help keep your dog clean but its important not to over bath your dog. To much bathing can cause a dog to develop dry skin which will lead to more dander. Water should also not be very hot as hot water will also irritate a dander problem.
Its also important to remember that dog allergies are cumulative so if you have other allergens in your home they might be making your dog allergies worse. Keep your house clean and free of mold, dust, smoke and other possible problems. Make sure your dogs eating area is kept clean and wipe up any water spills right away as this is a prime spot for mold to take hold and start to grow.
If your problems are severe or just to frequent to handle see a allergist. A allergist may recommend medications or immunotherapy which could make living with your pet much more comfortable. If you are not sure if anyone in the house has allergies it might be best to pick a more hypoallergenic breed just to be on the safe side.
