How To Stop Smoking Without Anguish

Posted on April 25, 2008 - Filed Under Health and Fitness

If you want to know how to stop smoking without anguish, one of the main concerns you will have is how long it will take to forget about smoking. One thing no smoker wants is to spend the rest of their life wanting to smoke and not being able to.

One of the concepts that makes stopping smoking without anguish so difficult is the emotional attachment you have as a smoker, with your cigarettes. As a smoker, cigarettes are integral to most aspects of your life. You don’t go anywhere without them, you always make sure you will have access to them and you get very worried at the thought of not having cigarettes available.

Once you try to quit smoking, you become an emotional wreck as your mind focuses almost entirely on you inability to smoke. As you try to separate cigarettes from your life, it seems your mind can only think about one thing - smoking! This of course results in an almost impossible amount of anguish, resulting in yet another failed quit attempt.

To try and help you get your frame of mind right, why not think about this. There are times when you can go without cigarettes but you don’t worry about it. An example might be spending 3 hours in the cinema or 6 hours on a trans-continental flight. You might think about cigarettes and smoking whilst watching a film, or after eating your in-flight meal, but you don’t collapse into a gibbering wreck.

So how is it that you can last a film or a flight without worrying about it but you can’t seem to manage a day, let alone a week, without lighting up another cancer stick?

The thing is, when you’re watching a film or taking a flight, you know you can have another cigarette soon so you don’t worry about it. When you quit smoking, the only difference is that you ‘know’ you can’t have another cigarette.

Because you have spent your entire smoking life worrying about whether or not you have access to cigarettes, once you choose to quit and thus ‘know’ you will not be able to smoke again, it becomes a problem for you.

If you want to stop smoking without anguish, you need to learn how to master that emotion and feeling that you have when you are watching a film at the cinema or taking a transcontinental flight and convey the security of knowing you can smoke, into your quit attempt.

My advice to you is to handle each craving by thinking like you can have another smoke soon, but not just now.

Finally, if you are tired of trying to quit smoking using patches, pills and potions AND getting nowhere, maybe you need to try Tom Dainty’s Quit Smoking Bible only available at http://quitsmokingbible.com
