Corrupt Windows Registry

Posted on May 13, 2008 - Filed Under Computers and Technology

Windows, for whatever reason, does not come with its own built-in registry repair or optimization utility.

If you suspect that your Windows registry may have become corrupt, then you can leverage a registry repair utility to scan your registry for errors and even fix them.

How does your registry get corrupt and how can you prevent it from becoming corrupt again in the future?

Unfortunately, the onus of maintaining the integrity of the database is on the applications that use it. The registry is a passive data repository. There is absolutely no schema checking. No data integrity validation takes place. No referential integrity cross-checks are performed before committing any adds, deletes, or modifications you attempt to make against the registry.

In fact, it is extremely easy to cause permanent, irreparable damage to your Windows installation, from which there is no recourse for recovery, if you mess with the registry without knowing what you are doing. The only recourse in such a situation would be to reinstall Windows from scratch.

As you install programs onto or uninstall programs from your computer, these software programs must update the Windows registry accordingly. However, it is not uncommon for applications to not remove all of their registry settings cleanly when upgrading or uninstalling software. The same applies to hardware as well. If you add or remove hardware from your machine, the information about that piece of hardware could conceivably remain in your registry forever.

There are a few problems with this. One is that the registry takes up disk space on your hard drive, and it can grow to be dozens if not hundreds of megabytes in size. The lager the registry, the more inefficient a registry searches become. Secondly, if there are inconsistencies, typos, errors, or invalid references within the registry, this can cause your programs and even the whole operating system to become unstable and become very buggy.

That’s why it is imperative that you clean your Windows registry periodically. Taking care of your Windows operating system is like taking care of a car. You need to take care of both of them with periodic preventative maintenance. Cleaning the registry is like giving your car an oil change a tune up.

Run a FREE scan of your Windows registry for errors and you will see a marked boost in your PC’s performance.
